Crews battle 2-alarm fire at restaurant near SouthPark Mall

Charlotte Fire asked anyone unable to locate family members who were working at the construction site to call 911. Police shared the same information, saying an officer will complete a missing persons report. They asked family to provide the person’s full name, date of birth, physical description and a recent photo. Witnesses told Channel 9′s Joe Bruno that the fire started on the second floor.

SouthPark Mall was closed due to the proximity of the fire and motorists were advised to stay away from the area as several roads were closed. They noticed the side of the building was smoking, so they started yelling out of the window, but the firefighters couldn't hear them. CMPD said Tuesday those two people have not been charged with anything at this time. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that one of its deputy marshals, Thomas Weeks, was among those killed. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot, and three of them died, the police said.

Construction workers said there were nearly 100 people working at the site at the time of the fire. On Thursday, fire officials confirmed that 15 workers were rescued from the blaze. The Starcraft 40-passenger bus was traveling westbound on Exposition Boulevard with only the driver and one passenger aboard when the collision occurred, according to a statement from USC Transportation. The bus driver and passenger were the two most severely injured, according to fire department officials.
