SouthPark Mall was closed due to the proximity of the fire and motorists were advised to stay away from the area as several roads were closed. They noticed the side of the building was smoking, so they started yelling out of the window, but the firefighters couldn't hear them. Charlotte fire said while they were battling the blaze, they had several "Maydays," which means crews were either trapped or had access issues when escaping. Firefighters called two maydays because crews got trapped or had issues with accessing means of escaping, Johnson said. The five-alarm blaze happened on Liberty Row Drive near Fairview Road. CMPD said Tuesday those two people have not been charged with anything at this time. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that one of its deputy marshals, Thomas Weeks, was among those killed. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot, and three of them died, the police said.

Construction workers said there were nearly 100 people working at the site at the time of the fire. On Thursday, fire officials confirmed that 15 workers were rescued from the blaze. The Starcraft 40-passenger bus was traveling westbound on Exposition Boulevard with only the driver and one passenger aboard when the collision occurred, according to a statement from USC Transportation. The bus driver and passenger were the two most severely injured, according to fire department officials.
The officers were from multiple agencies.

But because of how quickly it spread, it was impossible for the workers to get it under control. The shooting investigation impacted many Charlotte drivers.
